FGM Religious, Cultural and Legal Myths

This paper written by the Islamic Cultural Centre and The London Central Mosque in conjunction with the Foundation for Women’s Health, provides an overview of the practices of various forms of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) among the Muslim population in western communities and worldwide. It discusses FGM within a framework of human rights violations and argues that while there are incidents of FGM among non-Muslim communities; Muslims in particular have justified the act with terminology associated with Islam. The paper goes on to discuss the legal and health implications of practising FGM in the UK and worldwide, and hadith that condemns the practise.
